Sustainability

The Cutting Room has long had a passion for sustainability and reducing our environmental impact in an industry renowned for chemicals and creating waste.

We have been leaders in driving positive practises within our sector and joined the Green Salon Collective, to create positive change with like minded salon partners.

It is important that the products we use are as naturally derived as possible whilst maintaining the highest quality and performance. We have been partnered with Aveda for over a decade. Aveda has been at the forefront of positive change, making them the perfect partner to supply our hair product range. Like us they are constantly striving for improvements, one example being in 2019 when they enhanced their range to make it 100% vegan.

Founded by environmental experts, hairdressers and eco campaigners, Green Salon Collective are the original authority on salon sustainability throughout the UK and Ireland.

We recycle, compost and recover: hair, used foils, empty colour tubes, chemicals, PPE, plastic, paper and even salon towels.

100% of any money raised from recycling raw materials or new products made from waste goes to charity. By recycling the profits, every month we can support charities and organisations that are close to our hearts.
These currently include the following: FoodCycle – Haircuts 4 The Homeless – Mossy Earth.

The biggest winner here is that we reward the planet. We are diverting easily recyclable materials that are currently being sent to landfill. These are materials such as aluminium foil which is a commodity that can be recycled an infinite amount of times. We’ll also recycle your hair to ensure that it will be used to either help adsorb oil from our waterways, be added into gardeners composting mixes, or if it’s long enough, be donated to wig making charities. There is absolutely no reason why either of these materials should be thrown away as general waste just to end up in the ground.

We don’t consider ourselves just a corporation—we are part of the planet’s ecosystem. Yet the very fact that we are a business makes it our responsibility to use our influence for good. We must set a positive example not just for the world of beauty, but around the world. These are the formative principles that define us:

  • The planet is our muse
  • Botanicals and science create powerful products
  • Vegan formulas rule all
  • The wind and sun fuel our factories
  • We use recycled plastic for packaging wherever possible

Our Mission in a Bottle
Our formulations, ingredient sourcing, manufacturing and packaging are just some of the ways we put our beliefs into practice.

VEGAN
Aveda is 100% vegan, now and forever. In summer 2019, we announced our transition to creating 100% vegan products. While we only used honey and beeswax in a few of our products, making the switch was no easy task. However, we recognized the need to stay true to our planet-first commitment and recreated our iconic products to ensure 100% vegan formulations across the board. We’re proud to deliver high-performance hair care and vegan formulas, proving you don’t need to pick one or the other.

RESPONSIBLE SOURCING
We understand the power and potential of harnessing nature, which is why we aim to use naturally derived ingredients in our formulations whenever possible. In order to do this and respect the environment, we adhere to responsible sourcing practices. This ensures that we harvest plant-based ingredients from renewable plant-based origins—all without negatively impacting the ecosystems from which they are sourced.

RESPONSIBLE MANUFACTURING AND PACKAGING
We are changing the way the world views alternative energy sources. We are proud to be the first beauty company to manufacture products with 100% wind power* through renewable energy credits and carbon offsets. In addition to wind energy, Aveda has also taken major strides in solar power. Nearly 3,000 solar panels make up the 3.6-acre solar array at Aveda HQ in Blaine, MN. This solar energy powers up to 50% of our manufacturing facility’s annual demand and reflects our commitment to renewable energy.

Aveda has also blazed the trail in responsible packaging practices. We were the first beauty company to use 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials in our packaging, and strive to do so wherever possible.
